FAQs
1. What is “Modern Slavery”?
Modern Slavery refers to situations where offenders use coercion, threats or deception to exploit victims and undermine their freedom. This can include:
- servitude – where victim’s personal freedom is significantly restricted, particularly in relation to stopping work or leaving their place of work
- debt bondage – where victims in poverty borrow money and have to work to pay it off and the debt is manifestly excessive, or the victims services are not applied reasonably to pay it off (length and nature of the services may not be limited or defined)
- forced labour – any work or services people are forced to do against their will, usually under threat of punishment
- slavery – where victims become an object of purchase and subject to ownership, where their labour is used in an unrestricted way
- human trafficking – the recruitment, harbouring and movement of a person for exploitation
- forced marriage – where coercion, threats or deception are used to make a victim marry, or where the victim doesn’t or isn’t capable of understanding the nature and effect of the marriage
- the worst forms of child labour – where children are exploited through slavery or similar practices, engaged in hazardous, unsafe or immoral work.

2. Why are we surveying our suppliers?
It is important that we understand who we are building business relationships with, and that our supply partners reflect our commitment to modern slavery mitigation and elimination, where practicable.
In addition, we are required by law to publicly report on the modern slavery risks in our supply chain. To do this we need to be able to understand and identify what and where these risks might be, and the best way to do this is by asking our suppliers directly so that we can better understand how they operate.
